We played at our first house party tonight, it was ace. The guests were really friendly, the food superb and when we passed round some perc everyone went nuts!
Sam and I were filmed as part of the Yorkshire Symphony on Spurn Point, we sat on the beach and mimed our parts for the camera. This is being broadcast on the 2nd August, all that was missing was some huts!
We had a fantastic time at the Cross Keys in Selatynn,Oswestryon July 2nd , what a great venue, here is a section of an email which the club sent out to all it's member's " Our 70th concert was a great evening. We’ve never had so many people linger afterwards to talk with the musicians. Gary Hammond of the Hut People surprised and delighted us all with his astonishing collection of percussion instruments from all over the world. He talked about them enthusiastically throughout the evening, explaining where they were from and how they had developed, and afterwards there was a chance for anyone to have a go." As one of the audience put it in her email to us today – What an excellent gig last night! Sam and Gary really entertained and made some great music - what a fantastic range of instruments and such nice people too - really friendly and so enthusiastic (not to mention talented!). Thank you once again for a fine Offa Events evening out.
Jane and Dave
Sam and I are going into Radio Humberside on the 25th June to talk about our connection with the band Forro Porro and play a couple of Forro tunes, taking my bow and arrow ( berimbau ).
Recorded yesterday for Benjamin Till's Yorkshire Symphony. Nice quote from his blog, "After him came the Hut People; a duo consisting of an extraordinary percussionist who used to play with the Beautiful South and perhaps my favourite musician to pass through the doors of the studio so far; an accordion player called ...Sam, who worked tirelessly to make sure that every single note and nuance of my music was observed.
Just back from Swaledale festival, one gig sold out and the other very nearly. We had a wonderful time and before we could get off stage the festival director booked us again for 2011. We are already looking forward to it. On Tuesday 15th June we are off to Leeds to record as part of the Yorkshire Symphony being composed for the county, should be interesting!
It's a busy month for me and Sam, kicking off with the Swaledale festival on the 10th, 11th, and 12th June. we played there last year and we had a ball. This year we have 2 gigs, 2 workshops and a session in a local pub, happy days.
Please check out our video's on the wonderful http://www.songsfromtheshed.com/ , one of them features myself and Sam improvising a tune with me using the shed as an instrument, it's what shed's are for!

We had a great time at the Upton upon Severn folk festival, Morris dance central, there were hundreds of them with bells attached! They certainly know how to enjoy themselves, we played in the marquee ot The Kings Head pub and had a great time. It was my first! camping experience and of course it bucketed down, the Guinness helped me to sleep. On the Sunday we packed up and went to Clevedon for a http://www.songsfromtheshed.com/ session. This was something else, huts and sheds in perfect harmony. Jon Earl who runs it invites artists and groups to come to his shed ,play live and get videoed. Ours should be online around the 21st May, I will let you know when I have the date, but in the meantime please give it a visit, it's ace. I will put a link on our links page.
We are playing a short set at Robin Hood's Bay Folk Club on the 21st May as a taster for our gig at The Coliseum in Whutby the night after on the 22nd May. This is the folk club which started our connection with Musicport and we will be forever grateful to them. It's a wonderful club and well worth a visit!

We have finished our mini weekend tour and had a great time, first up was a support slot for Keep It Cash, great gig ,went down well and both of us ended up with a parking ticket! On the Sunday we travelled to Walton Nr Wakefield. It was an afternoon gig in a village hall and it's the first gig where there were more people dancing then sitting which is rare but very enjoyable. Both venue's were full of lovely people and we had a ball.
We played the North East Lincs World Music Festival and really enjoyed ourselves, the gigs were outside and it was really cold. It's the first time I have played 3 gigs with my coat on and I swear I could hear poor Sam's finger's creaking!!

The Hut People "Home is where the hut is" Label: Fellside; FECD228; 2010
The Hut People is an English duo with Sam Pirt on accordion and Gary Hammond on percussion. The duo was formed only two years ago and now their debut album is released on the Fellside label. They play tunes from all over the world, from Cajun to Canadian, but with a focus on Finland. The opening track Happy one step is such a happy song that even I feel my depression vanish within a few seconds. Very different is the second song Kuortaneen from Finland, written by the Varttina accordionist Markku Lepisto. The Hut People is doing a great job here, strong percussion bringing a mystic mood and Pirt is playing a wonderful piece of accordion . Back to happiness in La gran noticia and they play a wonderful version of Lepisto’s Lansiranta. Don’t I know this melody from Sharon Shannon as well? Or am I mistaken? With Princess royal they prove to be excellent players of Irish traditions as well. The album ends with a composition of that other great Finnish accordion player, Kaleniemi. A powerful end of a wonderful album that took me by surprise. I did not expect an album with such a variation in styles, well played and with the right atmosphere.

Going back in to the foxes den show but this time with Sam to play some live tracks from our latest album, we are going to try and bring in our friend from a local Market Weighton fish and chip shop to play one of our tunes. He doesn't know this yet but with a little persuasion we are sure he will bring his box along. Be sure to listen in on 101.8Fm Vixen 101, right plaice right time!
Just thought we would put in the bit that mentions us,
Just to say a big thanks to everyone who helped make our 10th anniversary festival the best yet. We’ve had lots of feedback and it’s been overwhelmingly positive (although as always we’ll look to improve things in the light of constructive criticism). There were some wonderful highlights – I think most people agree Rango were a big hit and possibly the stand-out act but if you go to our website polls you’ll get an idea of what went down well & please add your own thoughts there. It is great to see two Yorkshire based acts that we really support and believe in (Samay & The Hut People) making such an impact again as well as the hidden gems such as Voluntary Butler Scheme.
We are really pleased to be leading the favourite act poll in our section, myself and Sam would like to thank all those who voted for us.
We do now have a photo gallery on the website, so please, please send us some photos of huts from your travels. We would love to put them up in our gallery. Come on you know you want to!
Although the cd does not officially come out until 27th January 2010 we do have some for sale. Please get onto our mailing list by giving your email to Sam at Samjpirt@aol.com. He has a shipping form which you can fill in and the cd will wend it's way towards your hut.The cd is out on Fellside records, check them out they have a great catalogue of folk and jazz album's
Musicport are running a poll for the favourite artist 2009, we came second overall last year behind Toumani Diabate. This year we are even more pleased because out of the two polls which are running we are ahead in our one and have most votes overall. Thanks to everyone who has voted for us, my favourite was Rango , I will have to ask Sam what his one was. Sam and his mum Gill also had a stall raising money for the Sengwer tribe in Kenya. They have both been involved in this project for many years and it has been very successful. Those of you on our mailing list should not have to wait long for the cd it is approaching as I type. Although it's official release date is January 2010, Fellside records have given us the go ahead to sell the first batch of cd's.. I will try and keep you up to date on Hut people stuff and the musical things me and Sam get up to whilst not playing together.
We are really thrilled to be album of the week, especially from a station that plays such brilliant music.Listen to GondwanaSound, live every Wednesday 11am-midday on Sheffield Live! 93.2FM on your radio or via the internet through SheffieldLive.org . Jill Turner spins the tunes and the playlist is always magical and relevant to what's happening out there. Below is a quote from the Gondwana Sound's mailout email.....
" Our album of the week comes from The Hut People and extraordinary combo of Percussion and Piano Accordian. Ever since we saw them at Musicport two years ago we've been waiting in anticipation for their debut album and we haven't been disappointed.
